I Found a Stray Pet
When you find a stray pet and cannot contact its owner, report the animal and its location to your local authority who are responsible for coming to collect the animal.
If you decide to take the pet into your own home, and feel it is safe to do so, then it is recommended to do the following:
Check for a collar or tag: Look for a name tag on the pet's collar.
Take the pet to your local vet or shelter: If you can transport the pet, take it to the nearest animal shelter.
Spread the word: Create a found poster and put it up around the area where you found the animal, share a photo of the pet on social media and on any lost pets websites.
If you find the pet's owner please remember to inform those who are still looking and take down any found posters.
Why do you need to contact animal control?
Animal control can scan the pet's microchip and try to find the owner.
If you want to keep the pet, you might need to notify animal control.
You could be liable to the owner for the pet's value if you don't try to find the owner.
What should you look for in a shelter?
- A no-kill shelter that won't euthanize pets that don't find a home quickly.
Ensure you are always reachable when it matters most.
